Volvo Penta IMO III solution

Volvo Penta IMO III solution

Overview

IMO III refers to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Tier III emission standards, which set limits on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from marine diesel engines. These standards are part of the MARPOL Annex VI regulations, which aim to reduce air pollution from ships by setting limits on emissions of harmful substances.

MARPOL Annex VI Tier III regulations specifically target NOx emissions in certain designated emission control areas (ECAs). These ECAs are regions where stricter emission standards apply to ships in order to mitigate air pollution and its impact on the environment and human health.

NECA is a designation under MARPOL Annex VI, which stands for the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. NECA designation implies that stricter regulations regarding nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions apply to ships operating in those areas. Ships operating in NECAs are required to meet lower NOx emission limits, which can be achieved through the use of cleaner technologies or alternative fuels.

Ships operating in IMO Tier III ECAs must comply with significantly lower NOx emission limits compared to those operating outside these areas. To meet the IMO III standards, shipbuilders and engine manufacturers use advanced emission control technologies such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, which reduce NOx emissions from marine engines.

Volvo Penta has been actively developing and producing engines that comply with IMO III emission standards. To meet IMO III standards, Volvo Penta, like other engine manufacturers, employs advanced emission control technologies including Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Based on SCR exhaust aftertreatment technology, Volvo Penta’s robust IMO Tier III solutions are designed for the toughest marine conditions. Volvo Penta offers an IMO Tier III engine range for Volvo Penta IPS, Diesel Inboard, Marine Genset and Auxiliary applications:
