Volvo Penta D13 Stage V generator set engine
Most people know Volvo Penta from boats. The same engine family also powers machines, generator sets, pumps, rail vehicles and farm equipment. As the official Volvo Penta distributor for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, we at BMG Power Systems supply these engines to equipment and genset builders, repower older machines, and provide parts and service for Volvo Penta industrial engines across the Baltics.
The engine range
Volvo Penta industrial engines come in two families.
Off-highway engines (VE) are variable-speed engines for machines: loaders, cranes, drilling rigs, pumps, farm and forestry equipment, and rail. They run from 5 to 16 litres and from 105 to 585 kW.
Generator set engines (GE) are built to run at constant speed for gensets. They come in 8, 13, 16 and 17 litre versions and cover roughly 90 to 700 kWe, depending on the rating.
Both families include engines for EU Stage V as well as earlier emission stages for markets and uses where those still apply. Full figures are in the off-highway engine range (PDF, 2024) and the generator set engine range (PDF, 2024).
Service
Our Volvo Penta certified field technicians cover all three Baltic states from Tallinn, Riga and Klaipėda. Most industrial engines can’t come to a workshop, so most of our work is done on site.
What we do:
- Scheduled maintenance to Volvo Penta’s service intervals, with genuine parts and the right fluids.
- Fault finding with Volvo Penta’s diagnostic tools: reading fault codes, checking engine data and updating engine software.
- Repairs and overhauls, from replacing a turbo or injectors to a complete engine overhaul.
- Exhaust aftertreatment on Stage V engines, which needs its own checks and maintenance.
- Warranty work as an authorised Volvo Penta partner.
Service agreements
If you run several machines or gensets, or one that simply can’t be allowed to stop, a service agreement takes the planning off your hands. We agree the schedule and the price in advance, keep track of when each engine is due, and come to you. You know what maintenance will cost over the year, and nothing is missed because someone forgot to book it.
Agreements can cover a single engine or a whole fleet, at one site or several across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Standby generators
A standby genset can stand unused for months, and then it has to start first time and take the full load straight away. That is exactly when neglected batteries, old fuel or a failed coolant heater show up. We check and test standby gensets on a fixed schedule, so problems are found before the power goes out rather than after.
Repowering
An older machine with a worn-out engine is often still worth keeping. A new Volvo Penta engine gives it a second life and, where the rules require it, brings it up to current emission standards. Recent work includes:
- a TGM40 shunting locomotive repowered with a Volvo Penta TAD1385VE Stage V engine
- two TAD1643VE-B engines delivered to a Lithuanian industrial customer, with the old engines returned to Volvo Penta
If a new engine isn’t the right answer, a remanufactured Volvo Penta engine usually costs less and is available sooner.
Genuine parts
Using genuine parts pays off. A modern industrial engine is built to tight tolerances, and the parts around it are designed for that exact engine. A filter that looks the same can filter less, or have a bypass valve that opens at the wrong pressure. A cheaper injector or sensor may fit, yet still upset fuel delivery or emissions control. On Stage V engines, the wrong part or the wrong oil can damage the exhaust aftertreatment system, which is one of the most expensive parts of the engine to repair.
Then there’s warranty. If a non-genuine part causes a failure, the repair is usually not covered. A few euros saved on a filter can end up costing an engine.
We supply genuine Volvo Penta parts for industrial engines in all three countries. To get the right part first time, send us the engine serial number from the type plate. More on why genuine parts are worth it.
